The Moniker

My artist's pseudonym was not one I came up with, and I am delighted that this is the case. Its origin traces back to when a few college friends and I decided to play one of my songs for a campus variety show, and our egg-shaker Mark Wesolick declared that he had decided on a title for our group: Forgetful Listener. He had picked the two words out of our Catholic breviary’s reading from the New Testament letter of James.

James writes in this letter about a man of excellence who peers into the ideal law of freedom, receives the Word of God, and acts on it.
“Hey,” I thought, “That’s what I desire to be.”
Upon closer inspection, James says that such a man is no "hearer who forgets”, or (from the Breviary translation) no "forgetful listener”.

“Oof,” I thought, “I’m definitely one of those."

The more I thought, the more it seemed to be a darn good name.
